In the same way that every tattoo is unique to the individual, so too is removal of that tattoo. A number of factors can influence the removal process and properly assessing them all is critical to a positive experience. The tattoo removal process begins with a complimentary consultation where we assess the size and location of your tattoo, skin tone, as well as the color and depth of the ink. We will then determine the number of treatments needed and how skin tone affects laser tattoo removal.
“Skin tone affects tattoo removal in a very big way. In fact, it’s the number one factor that we take into account during your consultation to determine the course of treatment for removal.”
Skin tones are often discussed in terms of the “Fitzpatrick Scale,” a classification system based on the skin’s response to sun exposure. It’s helpful to know what type you are in order to determine how effective laser tattoo removal will be for you. But keep in mind that there are exceptions to every rule, and the only proven way to determine your candidacy is through a personal consultation with our laser tattoo removal technician.
Fitzpatrick Skin Types:
Fitzpatrick Type I
Highly sun-sensitive, always burns, never tans.
Example: Very pale Caucasian, freckles, or Albino
Fitzpatrick Type II
Very sun-sensitive, burns easily, tans minimally.
Example: Fair-skinned Caucasian
Fitzpatrick Type III
Sun-sensitive skin, sometimes burns, slowly tans to light brown.
Example: Darker Caucasian, European mix
Fitzpatrick Type IV
Minimally sun-sensitive, rarely burns, always tans to moderate brown.
Example: Mediterranean, European, Asian, Hispanic, Native American
Fitzpatrick Type V
Sun-insensitive skin, rarely burns, tans well.
Example: Hispanic, Afro-American, Middle Eastern
Fitzpatrick Type VI
Sun-insensitive, never burns, deeply pigmented.
Example: Afro-American, African, Middle Eastern
The tone of your skin will have a direct impact on your results. Different skin tones require different protocols for effective treatment. The tattoo removal laser works by making a distinction between the ink and your skin. The more contrast there is between the two, the more aggressive we can be with the laser settings. Knowing your skin type helps us predict your response to laser tattoo treatments as well as letting us know which lasers can be safely used on your skin.
