SPF Baby

“Let’s talk about SPF, baby. Let’s talk about you and me. Let’s talk about all the good things, and the bad things that may be (the sun). Let’s talk about SPF!”

Spring is here and summer is around the corner! That being said, SPF is our BFF and we need to make sure we are not just putting on our SPF, but reapplying as well. Not only does Eminence Organic Skin Care have your basic SPF’s, but they have mineral SPF’s that are creams or even powders. Then of course they have primers and moisturizers with SPF as well. Basically what I am saying is that there is a SPF for everyone!

Why using SPF is important:

  • Eminence SPF’s are broad spectrum, meaning they protect you from UVA, UVB, and UVC rays.
  • SPF protects you from damage that is done from the sun.
  • Premature aging (Aka fine lines and wrinkles!)
  • Skin cancer
  • Dehydration
  • Overall skin damage

How to Properly Use SPF:

  • If it takes 20 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using an SPF 15 sunscreen theoretically prevents reddening 15 times longer — about five hours.
  • Sunscreens should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the ingredients to fully bind and absorb into the skin.
  • Reapplying sunscreen is just as crucial as putting it on in the first place. Please reapply the same amount every two hours. (Sunscreens should also be reapplied immediately after swimming, toweling off, or sweating a great deal.)

Common Myths about SPF:

  • Although the sun can give us some benefits like Vitamin D, that doesn’t mean that we won’t get any while we wear our SPF. Some people will disagree, but the majority of doctors will also say that you won’t become Vitamin D deficient if you always wear your SPF. If you feel like you are becoming deficient, there are specific foods that are very rich in Vitamin D, or there are supplements. Those options to get more Vitamin D is a lot safer than going out in the sun unprotected.
  • It’s cloudy outside, I don’t need any SPF. FALSE! Doesn’t matter if it is cloudy, raining, or snowing, you always need your SPF. Damage can be done the moment you walk outside, those rays are penetrating through those clouds whether you realize it or not. Wouldn’t you rather be safe than sorry?
  • Most damage is done when you’re a child, I don’t need SPF now that I am an adult. Another FALSE statement. Yes, when you are younger your skin is more sensitive and your chances of developing skin cancer are higher when you tan/burn your skin before the age of 18, but by that age, you have only got 25% of your total sun exposure you will typically have in your lifetime. Meaning, there is a LOT of opportunities to seriously hurt yourself.
  • Pale skin is ugly. Now this one is an opinion and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but let me say this, ALL SKIN IS PRETTY! There really are no excuses to not protect yourself. The sun is extremely damaging. If you are pale and you don’t want to be pale, then guess what? Self-tanner.
